Chorus Angelicus Celebrates 35 Years with a Powerful Musical Premiere: Renewal

Music for the Soul: Renewal, a jubilant concert celebrating the 35th anniversary of Chorus Angelicus, will premiere Andrew Thomson’s Requiem, a major new work by the ensemble’s longtime composer and percussionist “in-residence.” The program will be presented on Saturday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church in Hartford. This emotionally resonant program marks the launch of a season-long celebration of Chorus Angelicus’s remarkable 35-year history—a rare and proud milestone for any nonprofit arts organization. The concert will bring together the acclaimed children’s choir Chorus Angelicus and its adult counterpart Gaudeamus, in collaboration with the Manchester CT State Community College Chorale. Anchoring the evening is the world premiere of Requiem by Andrew Thomson, a composer whose rhythmic vitality and lyrical voice have been integral to the sound and soul of Chorus Angelicus for decades. His new setting of the Requiem mass promises to be both stirring and contemplative, a meditation on renewal and remembrance. The program also features hallmark selections from the ensemble’s rich repertoire: DNA by Chorus Angelicus alumnus Jeffrey Boratko, the jubilant Freedom Trilogy by founder Paul Halley, and the jazzy, luminous Jazz Mass by Bob Chilcott, which showcases the choir’s stylistic versatility. At the podium will be Dr. Gabriel Löfvall, Artistic Director of Chorus Angelicus, conducting the combined forces of singers and instrumentalists. He will be joined by Nadia Aguilar, Director of the Manchester CT State Community College Chorale, who will assist in bringing this ambitious and heartfelt program to life. Guest artists Theresa Thomason, Jeffrey Boratko, and Andrew Thomson himself will lend their voices and artistry to this moving celebration. “This concert is more than just a performance,” says Löfvall. “It’s a tribute to the decades of community, creativity, and choral excellence that define our organization. Andrew’s Requiem is an embodiment of that legacy—both a reflection of where we’ve been and a bold step forward.” Join us for an unforgettable evening of music, memory, and renewal.
